Eric Carl — Art & Design

Hello! As you may have deduced, my name is Eric Carl, and this is my website. It hosts a variety of art and design work, both personal and professional, from the past 20+ years. I chose to treat this version of my website as a not-quite-comprehensive history of my creative practice. It includes a selection of projects that have been the most formative.

Professionally-speaking I work as a Principal Designer at Ableton, where I'm responsible for the design of musical instruments and effects, as well as providing design guidance and resources for my department. Before that I spent eight years at Gnomon, a visual effects school in Los Angeles, where I worked as an Art Director and Instructor. Before that I began my career as a designer at TaigMarks Inc., an advertising agency in Elkhart, Indiana. I was born in Indiana in the US and currently live in Berlin, Germany.

This website was built by hand, partially as a humble protest against the exploitation and centralization of digital creative communities. Let's continute to cultivate our own human-scale and interdependent spaces on the internet. The words were skillfully edited by Jessy.

Here are some brief thoughts that I'm bringing with me into 2024:

• I aim to engage with technology responsibly and intentionally.
• I choose not to use design to manufacture desire or to "grease the wheels of capitalism with style and taste" ¹.
• I aspire to produce honest and authentic design that is a marriage of intangible concept and tangible form.
• I am interested in design's ability to be life enhancing, and how it might aid us in the exploration, reinforcement, and expression of our personal and cultural values.
